Take Responsibility for violence against women as a men's issue.
Men have
to get involved if we want to end violence against women.
Speak Up when you see men being disrespectful. Take the opportunity to act with pride at being a man who stands up against sexism and male dominance.
Do Your Homework by reading up on the countless women and men who have been doing this work for decades. Read a book and talk about it with friends.
Value Your Relationships as worthy of these issues. If you're a member of a community organization,
take leadership in a project designed to raise awareness about men's dominance and gender respect.
Work Against All Forms of Oppression. Educate yourself and others
about the ways that racism, classism, heterosexism, and other forms
of oppression intersect with masculinity and male dominance.
Speak Out Against Heterosexism. Men often use homophobia and gay-bashing to keep other men from taking a stand against sexism. One of the reasons that many men do not speak out is the fear that they will be labeled 'gay.' Proudly claim the identity of a man standing against violence and male dominance.
Don't Assume that women need or want men's protection. Be aware of how male "protector" patterns can be oppressive. Of course, be prepared to step up when asked to stand in solidarity.
